When is a visit from an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) indicated?
- If you have difficulty with positioning or latching on
- If your baby has low output of wet or dirty diapers
- If your newborn always quickly falls asleep at the breast, only to awaken when you take him away from the breast
- If your newborn has lost more than 7% of birth weight, or your baby is slow to gain weight
- If nursing is painful or you are experiencing significant engorgement
- If you think your milk supply is low, or feel the need to use formula to supplement
- If you are anxious about breastfeeding and want reassurance
- If you have had any previous breast surgery
- If you have special circumstances, such as a premature baby, twins or higher multiples, anomalies or maternal health concerns
- If you are choosing to relactate or induce lactation for an adoptive child
- If your mother's intuition tells you there is a problem
